Every year IKEA bring out a catalog and it is an eagerly awaited publication. This year’s catalog is particularly useful for any of you who work in design, whether interior or fashion, as it is now available in pdf format for easy downloading. How great to be able to access the whole catalog through your iPhone, tablet or laptop. The IKEA 2015 catalog comprises 166 pages of interesting designs and practical pieces which await you, and cleverly, the online content is compatible with Issuuclip, an app which allows you to highlight content and share your comments. In addition Issuuclip also allows you to see what other commentators have had to say on the designs in the catalog too. This will provide great feedback for everyone at IKEA, especially as this year they have decided to focus particularly on bedrooms and bathrooms. As Patty Lobell, Sales Manager, IKEA U.S. says “Everyone goes to sleep and wakes up, but everything in between those moments is very personal. We all have individual needs when it comes to our morning and evening routines.”
There is something remarkably clever about the design of IKEA furniture. Yes it is practical, yes it is good value, and yes, it is very functional. However it still manages to retain a distinct identity and character that nobody else can achieve, despite many trying to copy this successful recipe. Clean crisp lines combined with vibrant colors sees IKEA furniture very much high on the list of home creation items of the young and trendy. IKEA, somehow, always manages to stay one step ahead of the drive to be up to date, to the point where it is more a trend setter than a follower. This year’s catalog doesn’t disappoint on that score.
With music from Tom Rosenthal’s The Quiet Zone setting the mood the next video immediately underneath is a clever way of clearly defining what IKEA meant when they said they were focusing more on the bedroom and the bathroom in their recently released 2015 catalog. The inference that the bathroom is a ‘we/me’ space is a subtle, yet very clear message – this is a space for everyone, whatever they chose to individually do in it. As for the bathroom – well what’s not to be envious about with the refreshing contrast between turquoise and brilliant white? The free-standing roll-top bath looks as though it will never go out of fashion, yet it is a style that mixes well with cut clean white contemporary lines too.
Once again IKEA use clever time-lapse photography to get over their point. In the last of our three videos, found just below, the message is remarkably simple, yet the solution to a problem is extremely effective. No matter how small the bedroom, storage space shouldn’t be a problem, especially for clothes. Of course if you need a decent sized bed in a narrow room, then side drawer storage under a divan is out of the question as you just can’t open the drawers. If the room isn’t long, then even a drawer at the foot of the bed won’t work either. However IKEA have the perfect solution – a bed where the mattress lifts up with ease thanks to modern hydraulic hinges, and a wealth of storage space, with clever dividers, is revealed.
With the title ‘Flexible Furniture’ it is pretty obvious when the next video immediately below starts out that it is going to be about a sofa bed. However that is where any similarity between the original style sofa beds and IKEA’s latest design ends. How clever to acknowledge that a current trend for sofas is an L shape, and that this is not a restricting style when creating flexible furniture. This video shows off perfectly the ingenuity of the designers at IKEA. Watch how this sofa bed isn’t so much a fold- away type, but a simple rearrangement and store design. How cool to be able to put your bedding discretely away in the ‘bed’ as opposed to having to put it in a cupboard somewhere. This is part of the reason why IKEA score so heavily when people look to furnish very limited spaces and small apartments.
